Your Pre-Treatment Kybella® Guide

Permanently dissolve submental fullness and sculpt a defined jawline

Precision Submental Sculpting

At beyond|AESTHETICS, Kybella® provides a targeted, non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Utilizing a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid—a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat—Kybella® destroys fat cell membranes beneath the chin and along the jawline. Once destroyed, those cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. Proper pre-treatment preparation minimizes post-injection bruising, controls early inflammation, and ensures a comfortable treatment session.

Preparing for Your Injectable Hydration Treatment

avoid alcohol

7 Days Before Treatment

  • Discontinue Blood Thinners: Avoid over-the-counter blood-thinning medications and supplements—such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve, Fish Oil / Omega-3, Vitamin E, and St. John’s Wort—to minimize post-injection bruising and swelling in the submental area. (Do not stop taking prescription blood thinners without consulting your physician.)
  • Limit Alcohol Intake: Discontinue alcohol consumption 48 to 72 hours prior to your session, as alcohol dilates blood vessels and significantly increases the risk of bruising.

2 to 3 Days Before Treatment

  • Pause Active Topicals: Discontinue aggressive skin treatments or active topical ingredients—including Retin-A, retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and mechanical scrubs—on the neck and lower face to keep the skin barrier calm.

  • Skin Integrity Check: Ensure the submental and neck zones are completely free of active acne breakouts, cold sores, open wounds, rashes, or sunburn. If skin irritation develops, contact our clinic to reschedule.

    Day of Treatment

    • Arrive Clean & Makeup-Free: Thoroughly cleanse your face, jawline, and neck. Arrive at your appointment without makeup, lotions, sunscreens, or neck creams over the treatment area.
    • Shave Submental Area (Male Patients): Male patients should clean-shave their neck and submental area the morning of the appointment to allow clear grid marking and smooth needle insertion.

    • Eat & Hydrate: Have a light meal and drink plenty of water prior to your appointment to ensure you are comfortable throughout your session.

What to Expect on Treatment Day

    • Comprehensive Assessment & Grid Mapping: Your provider will review your profile goals, examine the submental tissue, and take baseline digital photographs. Using a temporary grid transfer tattoo applied beneath your chin, your provider will map out the precise, customized injection points to target submental fat safely while avoiding key nerves and blood vessels.
    • Topical Numbing & Ice Application: To maximize your comfort, a topical numbing cream or local numbing agent may be applied prior to injections. Cold ice packs are also placed under the chin immediately before treatment to desensitize the area and constrict local blood vessels.
    • Precision Injections (15 to 20 Minutes): Using a ultra-fine needle, your provider will administer a series of small, precise micro-injections directly into the marked grid points across your submental fat pad. The injection process itself is quick, typically taking under 20 minutes.
    • Brief Warmth & Sting Sensation: As the deoxycholic acid activates and begins disrupting fat cell membranes, you will feel a moderate warm, stinging, or burning sensation under the chin. This peak sensation lasts about 5 to 10 minutes and is managed with cold packs applied immediately post-injection.
    • Immediate Onset of “Bullfrog” Swelling: Within 10 to 15 minutes following injections, the submental area will begin to swell significantly, feel warm, and look puffy. This reaction is a positive sign that the fat cell breakdown process has officially begun.
    • Session Completion & Immediate Return to Routine: Once cold packs are applied and your skin is cleansed, you are free to go. There is zero medical downtime—you can drive yourself home, return to work, or go about your day immediately, though you may prefer to wear a loose scarf or high collar while initial swelling is at its peak.

    FAQ on Kybella®

How does Kybella® work, and is the fat reduction permanent?

Kybella® uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid—a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected beneath the chin, it targets and permanently destroys fat cell membranes. Once those cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, making your submental contouring results permanent.

How many sessions will I need, and when will I see results?

Because fat breakdown is progressive, most patients require a series of 2 to 4 treatment sessions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to achieve their desired jawline profile. You will begin to see visible results around 4 to 6 weeks after each session, with peak results settling at the 8-week mark as your body completely processes and clears the cellular debris.

How severe is the swelling, and how long does downtime last?

“Bullfrog” swelling is a completely normal and expected reaction—it actually signals that the deoxycholic acid is actively breaking down fat cells. Swelling peaks during the first 24 to 48 hours and gradually subsides over 1 to 2 weeks. While there is no medical downtime (you can resume daily activities immediately), most patients prefer to schedule their appointment before a weekend or a few days off to manage the initial visual swelling comfortably.

    Look and feel your best.
